How much filter glass do I need?
Filter glass comes in 25 kg bags. If you are planning to purchase a new sand filter, you will find the recommended amount of filter media in the specifications of the sand filter.
Note: For filter glass, you may subtract 15% from this. So if 100 kg of filter medium is indicated, 85 kg of filter glass is sufficient. For an existing sand filter, the recommended content is often indicated on the type plate on the outside of the sand filter. We always recommend a ratio of 4 to 1 for fine and coarse filter glass. Coarse filter glass should always be placed at the bottom. The 85% rule also applies here.
Example:
- For 125 kg of filter glass: 4 bags of fine filter glass and 1 bag of coarse filter glass.
- For 250 kg of filter glass: 8 bags of fine filter glass and 2 bags of coarse filter glass.
If you need less than 100 kg of filter glass, then only fine filter glass is sufficient.
When should I replace filter glass?
Filter glass lasts about 10 to 15 years. After this period, the glass does not filter as well and you will find it more difficult to clean the sand filter. You can replace the filter glass by scooping out the old filter media from the top of the sand filter and then adding the new filter glass.
