AFM® Grade 1 - activated filter media 0.4-0.8 mm - Dryden Aqua
AFM® Grade 1 (Activated Filter Media) from Dryden Aqua is the standard filter layer for pool sand filters, replacing quartz sand as the primary filtration media. With a grain size of 0.4-0.8 mm, Grade 1 provides the main filtration in your sand filter. Thanks to a unique triple activation process, AFM® ng filters down to 1 micron and is 100% bioresistant - no biofilm, no chlorine smell, fewer chemicals.
What is AFM®?
AFM® is made from 100% recycled green and brown bottle glass. Only green and brown glass contains the necessary metal oxides for the self-cleaning effect. During the activation process, the surface is chemically and thermally treated, forming free radicals (O- and OH-) as soon as water flows through the filter. These radicals completely prevent the growth of bacteria and biofilm - for more than 20 years.
No biofilm, less chlorine
With quartz sand, biofilm forms on the grains after 6 to 12 months. Bacteria convert urea (from sweat and urine) to ammonia, which reacts with chlorine to form trichloramine - the cause of chlorine smell and eye and skin irritation. With AFM®, this biological conversion does not take place in the filter. The result: up to 30% less chlorine compared to sand filters and up to 50% less compared to cartridge filters.
Up to 80% less backwash water.
Superior hydraulic properties of AFM® Grade 1 allow effective backwashing from 30 m/h. At a speed of 60 m/h, AFM® consumes only 1,730 liters of water per m² of filter surface - up to 77% less than other filter media. The recommended backwashing speed is 40 to 50 m/h.
Application and ratio
AFM® Grade 1 forms the main filter layer. For small filters (diameter < 800 mm) use 50% Grade 1 and 50% Grade 2. For large filters (diameter > 800 mm) use 50% Grade 1, 25% Grade 2 and 25% Grade 3. Preferably use a variable speed pump with flow meter. Filtration speed: 15-30 m/h. Note: 25 kg of sand is replaced by only 21 kg of AFM® (weight of sand × 0.85 = weight of AFM®).
