AFM Activated Filter Media explained

Maintaining water filtration systems can be a complex task, especially if you're looking for an efficient, durable and reliable solution. This is where AFM (Activated Filter Media) comes in. As a groundbreaking innovation in water filtration, AFM offers unrivalled performance and a wide range of benefits. This article gives an in-depth explanation of what AFM is, how it works, and why it is a favourite product among experts.

What is AFM?

AFM, developed by Dryden Aqua, is an advanced filter medium made from recycled glass bottles (mainly green and brown glass). It is designed as a direct replacement for sand in filter systems and doubles performance without requiring additional investment in infrastructure. It is fully self-sterilising, offers superior mechanical filtration and has impressive adsorption properties.

Thanks to its unique properties, AFM can be used in pools, aquariums, water treatment and even in aquaculture.

How does AFM work?

The unique operation of AFM is the result of an advanced manufacturing process:

  • Specific glass and optimal shaping
AFM is manufactured from a specific type of glass that is processed into particles with an optimal size and shape.
  • 3-step activation process
This process increases the surface area of the glass by up to 300 times. The result? A self-sterilising surface that prevents bacterial growth and offers high filtration efficiency.
  • Electrostatic and mechanical filtration
The activated surface has a negative charge, making it ideal for attracting and retaining fine particles and dissolved organic molecules.

The benefits of AFM

1. Superior filter performance

AFM offers significantly better results than sand or ordinary glass sand. Thanks to its advanced filtration, it can:

  • Filter 95% of all particles down to 1 micron (AFM ng).
  • Filter 95% of particles down to 4 microns (standard AFM).

By comparison, traditional sand can only filter particles down to 20 microns.

2. Self-sterilising properties

AFM prevents bacterial build-up, mudballing and channelling of unfiltered water. This ensures more consistent and effective filtration, without the risks typical of sand filters.

3. Cost savings

  • Less backwash water needed
AFM reduces water consumption by an average of 50% during backwashing.
  • Long lifespan
With a lifespan of more than 10 years and minimal depreciation, it is an extremely cost-effective choice.

4. Environmentally friendly

AFM plays an important role in the circular economy. It is made from upcycled glass bottles, making it both sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Applications of AFM

AFM is the ideal solution for optimal water quality in pools, both public and private. It offers a reliable and effective filtration solution to keep pool water clear and clean. In addition, AFM is also suitable for other applications, such as aquariums and aquaculture, where pure water is essential for sensitive ecosystems, and water treatment of groundwater, surface water, seawater and wastewater.

Different AFM types and grades

We only offer AFM ng (next generation). This type has hydrophobic properties that effectively remove organic substances, oils and microplastics. The available grades are:

  • Grade 1 – Main layer for filtration.
  • Grade 2 – Support and filtration layer.
  • Grade 3 – Support layer.

Calculation for your sand filter

To ensure your sand filter works efficiently with AFM ng, you can easily calculate the required weight in kilograms. Follow these steps:

  1. Check the capacity of your filter in kilograms – Check the manual of your filter or the type plate to see how many kilograms of filter material it can hold. This indicates the total weight required.
  2. Divide the weight over the correct grades of AFM ng – Use 70% of the total weight for Grade 1, which serves as the main layer. You can divide the remaining 30% over Grade 2 and/or Grade 3, depending on the specifications of your filter.

For example: If your filter requires 100 kg of filter material:

  • 70 kg Grade 1
  • 30 kg Grade 2 and/or Grade 3

With this simple calculation, you ensure that your sand filter performs optimally. If in doubt, consult a specialist to be sure of the correct distribution.

Certifications and approvals

AFM meets strict international standards, such as the NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 & 372 certifications for drinking water safety and the UK Regulation 31, which approves it for use in public water supply.

Why choose AFM?

If you are looking for a reliable, efficient and sustainable filter medium, AFM is an excellent choice. Fully optimised for performance and environmentally friendly, it is ideal for anyone who wants to achieve water of the highest quality.
