When fitting it, it's wise to tighten the screw by hand and not force it. If you tighten it too firmly, you risk damaging the thread again or putting the seal under pressure. Hand-tight and just a little further is usually more than enough to make the lid airtight.
Also make sure the sealing ring or O-ring is still in good condition. A new screw combined with a dried-out seal will still leak. Replace them together if necessary, then you're done in one go.
