Hydraulic pool cleaners: powerful cleaning on water pressure
Hydraulic pool cleaners - also called powered bottom vacuums - are smart cleaning robots that you connect to the suction side of your pool pump. They use the suction of the filter system to move through the pool and pick up dirt by themselves.
The big advantage? You no longer have to vacuum by hand, and you don't need a separate power supply. As long as your pump is running, the cleaner works - fully automatically. They are particularly suitable for surface-mounted and built-in pools with a flat or slightly sloping bottom.
How exactly does a hydraulic pool cleaner work?
Once the pump of your filter system is running, the cleaner draws dirt and water through the supplied hose. Inside, a moving mechanism (for example, a diaphragm, turbine or flapper) causes the cleaner to propel itself. It zigzags across the pool floor and sucks dirt such as sand, leaves or insects directly into the filter vessel.
Some models also take care of the walls, although the focus is usually on the bottom. For best operation, a minimum pump capacity is required - usually from 6 to 8 m³/h.
When to choose hydraulic?
Hydraulic pool cleaners are especially interesting for those:
- A swimming pool has a standard filter system
- No power supply or expensive robot to install
- Looking for an affordable solution for automatic cleaning
- Rather work with a low-maintenance system without electronics
They are robust, easy to maintain and easy to connect. All you need is a powerful enough pump and a suitable suction connection (skimmer or vacuum).
Choose the right model for your pool
Not every cleaner fits every pool. When choosing, pay attention to the minimum pump capacity, the shape of your pool (round, oval, rectangular), and whether you also want to clean the walls.
Brands such as Zodiac, Hayward and Kokido offer different models - from simple "flapper" models to more advanced hydraulic robots with a turbine drive and pre-filter.
